Purpose

The Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program is designed to provide financial assistance to students through part-time employment and encourages recipients to participate in community service activities.  In addition to providing opportunities for students to earn a portion of their educational costs, the program provides experiences for developing skills, creativity, and responsibility.  Student development and preparation for the job market are fundamental goals of the program; therefore, our policy remains that students are not to be paid for studying while on the job.  Students will be paid “an hour’s pay for an hour’s work”.

Augmenting the agency/program workforce is not one of the purposes of the FWS Program.  Federal regulations state that FWS students must not displace regular employees or contracted service. 

The America Reads Challenge is a grassroots call to action by President Clinton.  This unprecedented national campaign challenges every American to help all our children learn to read, including those with disabilities and limited English proficiency.  The Challenge touches citizens from all walks of life and sparks collaborations between educators, parents, librarians, business people, senior citizens, college students, and community and religious groups.

What To Do: Contact Student Employment Services to begin the process.  Agencies must submit proof of nonprofit status, sign a FWS Program Contract, and develop a job description.
